Following a pretty solid win against Lake Erie the night before, Oklahoma City unrolled a 5-4 shootout loss to the same team on Saturday night. While penalties were low, and shots were high for Oklahoma City in game one, only half of that recipe was stirred heavily in game two. In the end, the Barons suddenly good power play would pull of a 75% completion rating, which was enough to keep them hanging around. The skills competition got them again, and that’s too bad.
A scoreless first period was again backstopped by Richard Bachman, who would see fifteen total shots in just twenty minutes of play. He would be good enough, as he has been lately, to earn the Barons enough time at the other end to make things interesting.
The second period saw the Barons earn two power play goals sandwiched around two even strength goals by the Monsters. Anton Lander, in the opening thirty seconds, would get some incredible help from Roman Horak and Brad Hunt to open the scoring. Soudek and Olver would score for Erie less than five minutes apart to edge the visitors to the top by one. A slashing penalty at the mid-way point of the second period allowed Brad Hunt to unleash a heavy shot on the power play to tie the game.
As the rough stuff, which began in the first period, subsided the teams found their grooves in the third, but again the Monsters would take a two goal lead as the thirteen minute mark approached for the Barons. Desperate to score, the defenders really began “cheating” in the offensive zone, while Bachman sealed up the netminding. Roman Horak, now posting ten points in six games, would get one on the power play before some late third period heroics from Anton Lander, who would get his second of the night.
Both goaltenders were able to keep the puck from travelling across the goal line in the final minutes of the last period, and into overtime. At least two high quality scoring chances were had by both teams, but to a shootout we’d go.
Here are the shootout results:
10 Mark Olver No Goal
43 Mike Sgarbossa No Goal
37 Colin Smith Goal
46 Stefan Elliott Goal
Oklahoma City Shootout
23 Jack Combs No Goal
40 Martin Gernat No Goal
16 Anton Lander No Goal
15 Roman Horak Goal
20 C.J. Stretch No Goal
The Monsters would win the skills comp, and defeat the Barons 5-4 at the Cox Center. Despite the one standing point earned, the Barons ended their sixth game winning streak which was enjoyable and much needed.
The team heads out of town for a rough road trip as they will play Grand Rapids on Friday and Saturday night with a visit to Toronto on Sunday. Let’s get the streak going again. #hopefully
