Following last night’s Oklahoma City Barons game, a total of five current AHL players travelled to Edmonton for the start of Oilers training camp. On the list were Magnus Paajarvi, Teemu Hartikainen, Chris VandeVelde, Colten Teubert and the surprising addition of goaltender Yann Danis.
Official reports state that Nikolai Khabibulin hasn’t fully been cleared to play, and the team is expected to make an announcement soon on his camp status. Likewise, team spokespeople continue to tout the fact that his health status was still in limbo throughout the week despite the team hinting he’d be ready to go starting today.
Nonetheless, Yann plays the #2 for a while, and that’s good news for him. Maybe, just maybe, this gives Yann a bit of confidence after some really bad play of late including last nights loss where he only stopped 15 of 19.
As for a backup in Oklahoma City, expect Tyler Bunz to be called upon. Olivier Roy likely starts against Texas tonight.
UPDATE: The Oilers seemingly made a mistake to their camp roster. Officially reporting via twitter:
#Oilers camp roster update: goaltender Yann Danis is not in attendance, just Khabibulin and Dubnyk are here
Okay then. As we all get used to the shortened camp and new NHL, these things are likely to happen frequently. Will we see Danis in the lineup tonight in OKC? Who knows, just don’t ask the Oilers.
